Haverhill Days Inn Hotel wins Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence 2013Days Inn Haverhill has won another accolade to add to their collection of awards and certificates. The hotel has recently been awarded the 2014 TripAdvisor® Certificate of Excellence.

The award acknowledges hospitality excellence and is granted to businesses who consistently achieve outstanding customer reviews on TripAdvisor. This is the second successive year that Days Inn Haverhill has received a Certificate of Excellence.

Donna Revell, General Manager of Days Inn Haverhill comments,

"TripAdvisor is one of the most well known review sites in the world. We are absolutely delighted to have received this recognition of our consistently excellent service. Of course the ranking is important; our reviews have to be four or five stars for the hotel to be even considered for the Certificate of Excellence. However it is the feedback left on the site that is really important to us. The comments provide an invaluable insight into the experience the guest has had during their stay. We read and respond to every review received and take action where appropriate to ensure we are continually improving our level of service."

The hotel has responded to feedback from guests by making changes and significant investment in what they offer in a number of ways. Last month saw the installation of a BT Openreach dedicated fibre optic leased line to provide superfast broadband. The hotel took the decision to supply this service free of charge to both leisure and corporate guests and is actively encouraging the local community to come and use the facilities in the Kingfisher Lounge and Coffee Bar.

Another initiative introduced as the result of guest feedback is a hot breakfast selection. Although not a full English breakfast the continental buffet breakfast now includes sausages from Kedington butchers, Heinz baked beans, scrambled egg and hash browns in addition to cereals, croissants and toast. It has proved to be popular with guests.

Broadband bandwidth bonanza for businesses

Haverhill Days Inn Hotel wins Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence 2013Businesses can now reap the rewards of a local hotel's investment in their infrastructure. A BT Openreach dedicated fibre optic leased line has recently been installed at Days Inn Haverhill.

This latest addition to the hotel's facilities will provide free access to superfast broadband. It will be available for guests staying at the hotel; corporate clients using the conferencing facilities and local businesses and people who want to have a meeting or catch up in the comfortable Kingfisher Coffee Lounge and Bar area.

A dedicated leased line means that there is a dedicated connection between the exchange and the Days Inn Haverhill and a guaranteed bandwidth at all times. No one else will have access to the line unlike a standard broadband, or fibre optic broadband solution to the cabinet, where the bandwidth is shared by everyone else on the local exchange.

Nic Rumsey, owner of Days Inn Haverhill explains,

"The decision to install superfast broadband in the hotel is part of an ongoing strategy and commitment to developing our corporate business. By offering free access to the service we are adding value to both our business and leisure guests and providing yet another compelling reason to use our award winning hotel. I hope that local residents will pop in and enjoy a cup of coffee or a drink from the bar whilst they are accessing what will be one of the fastest broadband connections in the town."

Access to superfast broadband is a very real issue for local organisations. A number of the industrial estates in the town are not included in the overall broadband strategy for Haverhill, which sets out to have 80% of houses and businesses benefiting from superfast broadband by the end of 2015. Matthew Hancock, MP for West Suffolk and Minister for Skills and Enterprise is backing a campaign to get better broadband for Haverhill.

The main benefits that a superfast fibre optic dedicated leased line offers a business are reliability and speed. Data can be both sent and received at speeds of 20mbps, this is known as a symmetric connection. A standard connection provides downloads of up to 20mbps but uploads of data, such as sending emails, where information is being pushed from a computer, are generally far slower at speeds of between 0.5-1.0mbps. A symmetric connection is ideal for voice applications such as telephone and video conferencing and sharing information online.

Micron Communications, who has provided IT support to Days Inn Haverhill since the hotel opened, was responsible for the installation and set up of the superfast broadband. Jonny White, Group Development Manager for Micron comments,

"The broadband option that Nic has chosen is the best on the market today, there is quite simply no better system available. This is a huge investment; to put it into some perspective only around 2% of our extensive client base has made the financial commitment to a dedicated leased line. I am sure users will be impressed with the reliability and speed of the new system."

Full speed ahead for Days Inn Haverhill!

conference facilities - days inn haverhillIt has been an action packed start to 2014 for Days Inn Haverhill. The hotel is experiencing record levels of bookings for functions and conferences.

General Manager Donna Revell comments,

"At the end of 2013 the decision was taken to withdraw from an arrangement with local authorities to provide emergency housing. We wanted to increase the use of our conference facilities and focus on the development of the corporate business. This strategy has paid off and it's a real pleasure to be welcoming business guests back to the hotel and to have them using the facilities once again."

Days Inn recently hosted a wine and cheese tasting event as a thank you to their corporate guests. The evening was such a success that there are plans to hold another one in the summer.

Aside from the corporate bookings for conferences, training sessions, seminars and workshops the Days Inn is also attracting family functions and weddings. Last week there was a 40th birthday party, a 50th birthday celebration is booked this Saturday and a full wedding ceremony takes place next weekend. A civil licence means that couples can be married at the hotel as well as having their wedding breakfast and evening reception there.

"We love being a part of the local community and are delighted that people choose to use the hotel for their celebrations and special events. The team endeavour to ensure that positive memories will be associated with the functions hosted at the hotel."

An inspector calls..

Solar PV slashes carbon footprint for Haverhill Days Inn Hotel

The team at Days Inn Haverhill were delighted to pass a recent audit of the hotel and its facilities with flying colours. The Wyndham Hotel Group, which owns the Days Inn Worldwide brand, conducts annual audits on their hotel properties to ensure that high standards are consistently maintained. Days Inn Haverhill is independently owned by Nic Rumsey and operates under a franchise agreement.

The Wyndham audits are unannounced and carried out over 24 hours. The auditor checks into the hotel, uses all the facilities and interacts with as many of the staff as they can. They assess the cleanliness and condition of the hotel in addition to measuring how well the hotel complies with the brand guidelines and guest services procedures. Days Inn Haverhill attained an overall score of 90.3%.

General Manager Donna Revell explains,

"I was really pleased with the results. I believe that my team do an excellent job every single day and night of the week but it's always reassuring to know that we are actually getting it right. The Wyndham audit is particularly stringent and to pass with over 90% is an achievement that we are very proud of.

When the lady checked in at 2pm we had no idea that she wasn't a real guest. It was only after she had eaten breakfast and checked out at 10am the following morning that she announced who she was. Her audit then continued with inspections of the conference room, public areas, a further five bedrooms and the exterior of the hotel. She left us at 3pm and her final report was 48 pages long - the devil really is in the detail!"

The auditor, who has to remain anonymous, made a number of positive comments about individual team members. Her overall view was that all team members she spoke to were cheerful, friendly and helpful and that any requests she had were dealt with in a confident and efficient manner.

The Days Inn Haverhill breakfast, which includes the renowned handmade sausages from Kedington Butchers, also received positive feedback with the auditor commenting,

"This breakfast was a great start to the day with a variety of appealing items."

The final word goes to Guest Services Assistant Dan Betts, the newest and youngest member of the Days Inn Haverhill,

"This was my first experience of an audit. I actually checked the lady out and was on the reception when she announced who she really was. It was a bit of a surreal moment and then I just hoped that I had followed the check out procedure correctly and hadn't let the team down in anyway. We scored really well so my training had obviously paid off."

Solar PV slashes carbon footprint for Haverhill Days Inn HotelThe award winning Days Inn hotel in Haverhill has always strived to combine comfort with leading edge initiatives to help conserve energy costs and reduce negative impact on the environment. These initiatives have been carefully selected for reliability and practicality such as heat saving room sensors, ultra-low energy lighting, and water saving showers. This environmentally sustainable strategy has been a great success and the team have gone on to identify the tremendous potential of generating pollution free electricity from solar panels fitted to the hotel roof. In order to achieve this potential, Days Inn Haverhill employed Chelsfield Solar to identify, design and install a tailor made solar PV system to complement the high energy demands of a thriving hotel and conference centre.

Chelsfield Solar designed the scheme in coordination with the Days Inn team and the result is a financially sound investment that cuts running costs as well as slashing the hotel's carbon footprint. The result is an impressive 30kW of roof mounted solar PV panels that takes up 200m² of roof space and it delivers almost 25,000 units of electricity per year (for perspective, this is enough to power around 6 homes). Equally important for the hotel that has previously won Environmental Awareness acclaim from the Haverhill Chamber of Commerce is the reduction in carbon footprint of an amazing 13 Tonnes of carbon dioxide every year. And as the solar panels are guaranteed for 20 years and have a life expectancy of around 40 years this is a long term strategic investment for the environment and local business.

Days Inn Haverhill today announced that it has received a TripAdvisor® Certificate of Excellence award. The accolade, which honours hospitality excellence, is given only to establishments that consistently achieve outstanding traveller reviews on TripAdvisor, and is extended to qualifying businesses worldwide. Only the top-performing 10 per cent of businesses listed on TripAdvisor receive this prestigious award.

To qualify for a Certificate of Excellence, businesses must maintain an overall rating of four or higher, out of a possible five, as reviewed by travellers on TripAdvisor, and must have been listed on TripAdvisor for at least 12 months. Additional criteria include the volume of reviews received within the last 12 months.

Prime Residential site sold at Haverhill Research Park to Taylor Wimpey East Anglia

Carisbrooke Investments has exchanged contracts to sell 9.17 acres of residential land at Haverhill Research Park, Suffolk. The land has been sold to Taylor Wimpey East Anglia, who are now progressing their proposals for a residential scheme comprising 150 new homes.

The site, which lies on the Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Essex borders, already has outline planning consent and is set to provide a wide range of houses from starter units through to executive homes. The scheme will also include a number of affordable homes, which will be available to rent, or purchase via a shared ownership scheme.

The sale signifies an important milestone in the delivery of this 30-acre, £100m project.  The construction contract for the infrastructure and landscaping works will be awarded shortly with work starting on site in the next two months.

Andrew Anderson, Development Manager at Carisbrooke Investments, said: “This is very good news for Haverhill Research Park and the intense competition we experienced for the residential land is testament to the quality and setting of this site. The scheme will provide a high quality new residential area at the gateway to the town and forms part of a sustainable mix of uses that will be delivered on the park.

“We are delighted to have contracted with a major developer such as Taylor Wimpey, and look forward to working with them in delivering their development.”

The scheme will include up to 450,000 sq ft of office / laboratory / technology and supporting accommodation, which will be aimed at a wide spectrum of companies from start-ups to global corporates. Bespoke buildings will be available on a leasehold or freehold basis and occupiers can expect a high quality ‘science park’ environment with proposed on-site amenities that will include a day nursery, family pub/restaurant and hotel. Crucially, occupiers can also expect accommodation at prices that are significantly lower than elsewhere in the Cambridge sub-region.

Olympic Torch route through Haverhill

2.39 pm Haverhill, Suffolk

The torch makes its second foray into Suffolk starting in Burton End, Haverhill from the junction with Cleves Road. The journey continues along Camps Road and right into Market Hill and the High Street. From there, left into Harriet Road, left into Mount Road and left onto the A1017 Ehringshausen Way continuing into Lord’s Croft Lane. Then it’s onto The Pightle and right along the A143 Wratting Road as far as Ann Suckling Road.


Mike Ayton of Cambridge property consultant Juniper Real Estate was the lucky winner of a case of wine following a draw held by Carisbrooke, the developer of the Haverhill Research Park

The draw for local and national agents was held by Carisbrooke to mark the national launch of Haverhill Research Park with its 3-D fly-through video, brochure and park branding. 

The agents were asked to answer a series of questions relating to the video and those with the right answers were put into the draw.

Nic Rumsey, director of Carisbrooke Investments, explained: “The prize draw was the first in a number of good news stories for the park that we will be announcing this summer.

“Negotiations are well under way to select a contractor for the infra-structure as well as a developer for the residential element of the project,” added Rumsey.

Construction of the infrastructure for the £100m Haverhill Research Park is set to begin in July. The development will comprise 450,000 square feet of office, laboratory, technology, and supporting accommodation designed for a wide variety of companies from start-ups to major global corporations.

Proposals being worked up include an Innovation Centre, grow on space and bespoke buildings together with a hotel, family pub, restaurant and crèche.

The 8.25-acre residential housing scheme comprises 150 executive houses and flats. The agents for the project are Cheffins and Carter Jonas.

Days Inn enters The Ethical Dragons Den

Days Inn Haverhill’s General Manager, Donna Revell, became one of “The Dragons” when she judged the entrants of The Ethical Dragons Den at Castle Manor Business & Enterprise College.

Taking part in the competition were teams from Castle Manor, Sudbury Upper School, King Edward School, and Samuel Ward Arts & Technology College.

Each team presented their enterprise idea, answered questions about their pitch, and had a chance to “cut a deal” with the judges to try and win shields for their school.

The final scores saw Samuel Ward Team 1 winning the shield for highest investment, King Edward Team 1 with the best pitch, and Castle Manor Team 1 walked away with the shield for most innovative idea.

A Party to Raise the Roof


Days Inn Haverhill celebrated its 5th birthday in style with a party designed to raise the roof, although not literally!

The hotel memorably opened on December 30th 2006, only to close five hours later after its roof was lost to a tornado.

Over 100 guests who attended the party were entertained by Jade Donno and Eric Armstrong of Circuit Entertainments, and enjoyed a delicious hog roast supplied by M & A Hog Roast Company.

The party was rounded off by the cutting of our amazing (and appropriate) cake, made by Cakes By Dee, with speeches from General Manager, Donna Revell.

Haverhill Golf Club is located 1 mile from Days Inn Haverhill, reduced green fees are available for hotel guests.

Haverhill Golf Club has an 18 hole course and an attractive and comfortable club house. The golf course lies across two valleys and is set in pleasant parkland.

The front nine with its undulating fairways is admirably complemented by a saucer shaped back nine which is bisected by the River Stour as it meanders through a course with greens reputed to be among the best in Suffolk. Days Inn Haverhill Managers Celebrate Academic Success

Guest Service Managers Simon Bolton and Rachael Thorne were celebrating this week as they received their certificates from Otley College completing their Advanced Apprenticeships in Management.

As part of the apprenticeship, both Simon and Rachael attained an NVQ Level 3 in Management and a BTEC Level 3 in Introducing Management.

Days Inn Haverhill is proud to support our staff in all their training needs, from brand training programmes to college courses such as NVQ and BTEC, and the hotel has also been the recipient of the Haverhill Chamber of Commerce Employer of the Year award.

Simon will now be going on to study for an NVQ Level 3 in Sales, and Rachael will be studying for a BTEC Level 5 in Management.


Days Inn Goes Back in Time with The Centre for Computing History

Days Inn Haverhill were excited to be the venue of choice for the recent Hackers Delight Weekend run by The Centre for Computing History in association with MakeSpace.

The weekend was marketed by the Centre as: a get together of like-minded geeks, techs, nerds, coders, electronics wizards, writers, photographers, videographers, bloggers and general enthusiasts.

Here at the hotel we can’t claim to understand all that was going on but what we did see was a fantastic array of computers charting the history of the home computer including the Sinclair ZX81, BBC Micros and the Commodore C64 (and many more that we didn’t recognise!), along with lots of projects, retro arcade cabinets, and an ‘80s chill out room that took many of us back to our childhoods.

In the evening the guests enjoyed a fish and chip supper supplied by Chippy’s, and relaxed to some ‘80s and ‘90s music in our lounge.

Lunch Date for Young Students at Days Inn HaverhillOver thirty Year 1 students from Clements Primary School were invited to visit the Days Inn Hotel Haverhill recently.  The students were treated to a full tour of the hotel which included the bedrooms, linen stores, conference rooms - Falcon 1 and Falcon 2, bar, cellar, reception, office area and kitchen.  They were then served a buffet lunch in the Kingfisher Lounge and Bar area and were all given goody bags to return back to school with. 

General Manager Donna Revell extended the invitation to the school to celebrate the “facelift” of the Kingfisher Lounge.  Donna explains, “In September 2006 students from Clements Primary School were asked to name the hotel lounge and 2 conference rooms whilst they were being built ready for the hotel opening in December 2006. The students named the conference rooms Falcon 1 and Falcon 2 and the bar and lounge area the Kingfisher Lounge.  It was our intention at the time to invite the students to visit the hotel but because we were hit by a freak tornado on our opening night, which caused the roof to come off, that visit never actually took place.

Now, nearly five years later we have revamped our lounge area with new furniture, voiles, lamps and a 55 inch LED TV and it occurred to me that it would be good for the school to see the lounge that they named.”

Always keen to support the local community and to maintain their excellence in environmental awareness the Days Inn donated their old furniture to the Haverhill Fire Station and 677 SQN Army Air Corps.

Lesley Farrow, Head of Clements Primary comments, “The Year 1 children were absolutely buzzing with what a wonderful time they have had on their return from the hotel.  They were thrilled with their bags of presents and were all keen to tell me they had jumped on the beds! Thanks to the Days Inn Haverhill for inviting us and giving the children such a memorable experience.”

Castle Manor Students take Days Inn to marketGifted and talented students from Castle Manor Business and Enterprise College took part in a day, organised by the Suffolk Chambers of Commerce in association with Days Inn, where they had to create the marketing campaign for a new, fictional Days Inn Hotel.

In the morning students arrived and were given a briefing by Tim Kerr, Young Chamber Coordinator for Suffolk Chamber of Commerce. From there students were put into teams and were given free rein to organise their own workloads so that they were ready to present back to Donna Revel, Manager of Days Inn, who said “I was really impressed by the student’s appearance, behaviour and innovative ideas. They worked extremely hard and seemed to really enjoy the project. As a parent, employer and Committee Member of the Haverhill Chamber of Commerce, I feel that it is vital that local businesses support such ventures.”

Castle Manor Students take Days Inn to marketThe school was generously given free use of the conference facilities at Days Inn on both days and the Suffolk Chamber of Commerce kindly paid for the cost of resources and refreshments. Matt Bryant, Business and Enterprise Specialist Status Coordinator at Castle Manor said: “Days Inn and the Suffolk Chambers of Commerce are to be commended in supporting us in providing these students with the outstanding extra-curricular opportunities they need to be successful in their futures.  Gaining knowledge is important but, without the gaining the right skills and attributes, how will you successful use it?”

Year 9 students took part in this exciting day on 28th June.  Feedback from a Year 9 student was “It felt like a real situation and was good to work in a team.

Year 7 & 8 students undertook this activity on 5th June.  Feedback from a Year 7 student was “I think that this day is an excellent idea because we learned lots of skills and it was fun.”

Students plan the future of Haverhill at Days InnThis week saw Year 9 students from Castle Manor Business and Enterprise College hard at work as they spent a day at Days inn Haverhill preparing a marketing strategy for a fictional hotel opening on the Haverhill Science Park in July 2012.

The old furniture was donated to the local Fire Brigade and #677 Squadron who came to personally collect our famously comfortable chairs and sofas.

Days Inn Haverhill awarded Environmental Awareness Award at Haverhill Chamber of Commerce Business AwardsDays Inn Haverhill were delighted to be awarded the Environmental Awareness Award at the Haverhill Chamber of Commerce Business Awards on 14th May 2011 at Chilford Hall.

BBC1’s TV Apprentice Finalist Claire Young was guest speaker for the evening and also judged the Young Entrepreneur category. She said of her time in the county "It’s certainly the glitziest Chamber I’ve attended, there should have been an award for the most glamorous person with so many stunning dresses! The preparation, attention to detail and all round positive 'let’s have a great evening' vibe on the night are a testament to why Haverhill is an area of such change, business is growing in the town and the new era is really being embraced by Haverhill’s business community."

Days Inn Haverhill awarded Environmental Awareness Award at Haverhill Chamber of Commerce Business AwardsDonna Revell, General Manager of Days Inn Haverhill collected the award for Environmental Awareness on behalf of our team.  Days Inn is committed to reducing their impact on the environment and conserving energy.  The initiatives we have taken to achieve this include having room sensors for the heaters, low energy bulbs in all the lights and eco friendly shower heads which reduce water usage without affecting the performance of the power showers.  Donna said, “We were pleased to be recognised for our environmental awareness and had a very memorable evening at the Business Awards celebrating our achievement.  We will be adding this trophy to the one we won at the 2008 awards!”

Guests enjoyed a drinks reception on arrival and Haverhill’s Young Chamber were on hand to give them some pre-awards entertainment with a charity Olympic Wii Challenge which  raised £101 for the St Nicholas Hospice Care. One of those guests was Neville Reyner CBE DL, President of the British Chambers of Commerce and also Chairman of the UK Young Chamber. He said: "I was not only struck by the shared community celebrating success of local businesses but I was also very pleased to be welcomed by some young people from Young Chamber. Our future is in the hands of these young people and I was very proud that all were made aware of Young Chamber not only because they were there but because they explained their activities thoroughly."

After a three course dinner, Chairman Sarah Howard took to the stage to welcome the guests, sponsors and judges, Sarah said of the night: "The awards are all about promoting Haverhill and I don’t think we could have done it in a more effective way than we did on Saturday night.   However, it wasn’t just Haverhill businesses who enjoyed the night, we also had some fantastic high profile guests from outside the town which just goes to show we are generating great interest in Haverhill and what it has to offer."

Days Inn Hotel celebrates the Royal Wedding in styleThe Days Inn Haverhill invited the local community to join them to celebrate the Royal Wedding in style. Guests donned their wedding attire, and celebrated whilst watching the ceremony in their large comfy lounge area which was fully decorated to mark the occasion, whist enjoying cream teas.

Guests were able to purchase cream teas, sandwiches or maybe even a glass of Pimms from the well stocked bar. The event was held in support of Help for Heroes.

Many local businesses donated some fantastic prizes for the Royal Raffle (all proceeds went to Help For Heroes). Those included STP, Book Plus, Book Company, Robin Hood, Frankie and Benny’s, Gardiner Associates, The Gallery, Serenity, Slimming World, Abbey Croft Leisure, Days Inn, Catering J at Newmarket Races and the Harvester. A total of over £442.86 was raised.

In addition to the Royal Raffle there was a "name the bride teddy competition” – with the prize being ‘Build a Bear’ bride and groom teddies kindly donated by Paragon Signs. The winning name was Dorothy and was won by Tracey.

Judith Haworth, a royal guest that attended the event with her family said “It was so nice to be able to dress up and watch the Royal Wedding with the family and the local community, the hotel looked absolutely fabulous, the staff had obviously put a lot of time and effort into ensuring every one had a lovely time”.

Donna Revell, General Manager said “The team and I thoroughly enjoyed planning the event as well as the actual day. I hope the local community enjoyed our hospitality and am really pleased that we were able to raise money for Help For Heroes whilst having so much fun!.”

On receiving the donation from the event, the charity Help for Heroes sent us the following letter to thank us:

"I'm so happy to read that you all had a fantastic time at your Royal Wedding day at The Days Inn, Haverhill. It reads like it was  a brilliant day and very well supported. It was fantastic to read that the local businesses were so generous with prizes for the raffle as well. I love the photos and the décor for the tables really made it look like a Royal occasion!

£442 is an excellent amount to have raised, a BIG well done is deserved to all the generous people involved- we are so grateful for all your enthusiasm and hard work.

I hope that this email received you well and thank you for supporting H4H, we are just a small group of people trying to raise money for extraordinary young men and women and your efforts really do help them and if there is anything I can do to help please do not hesitate to contact me, I am all to happy to assist!

Days Inn Haverhill was pleased to host Leann Miller's last night of freedom. Leann and her friends enjoyed a relaxing meal in the function room at the hotel. The champagne flowed and everyone had a lovely evening.

St Nicholas Hospice Care is a local Suffolk based charity providing a range of special services for people with terminal and life shortening illnesses and their families.

The aim of St Nicholas Hospice Care is to improve the quality of lives of patients and their families during life shortening illness and bereavement.

The services are available to those living in West Suffolk and Thetford, and are provided by a skilled team of staff and volunteers.
